COVID-19 UPDATE: May 11, 2020
Since 1888, the Lake Minnetonka 4th of July Celebration has taken place in Excelsior.
Unfortunately, after discussions by the Board of Directors of the Excelsior-Lake Minnetonka Chamber of Commerce, the Lake Minnetonka 4th of July Celebration Committee and our partners who help put on this event regarding the global pandemic (COVID-19), the difficult decision has been made to cancel this year’s Lake Minnetonka 4th of July Celebration fireworks and coinciding events and activities. The health, safety, and well-being of everyone involved in the event is paramount.
While we know this outcome is disappointing, we believe it is the right decision at this time. We know the Lake Minnetonka 4th of July is a celebrated family tradition. We thank you for your continued support and participation and we look forward to coming together again in 2021 for a Lake Minnetonka 4th of July Celebration to remember.
LAKE MINNETONKA 4TH OF JULY CELEBRATION COMMITTEE ANNOUNCES 2020 PLAN
For over 130 years Lake Minnetonka has celebrated our nation’s independence in full fare. The history of Lake Minnetonka’s Fourth of July Celebration was first recorded in a newspaper in 1888. Now, the event has grown to attract over 100,000 visitors each year. Through the years it’s the efforts of the Excelsior-Lake Minnetonka Chamber of Commerce, committees, the Excelsior Morning Rotary, Minnetonka Community Education, volunteers, businesses, residents, neighbors and visitors that has allowed the celebration to evolve and everything from the Firecracker Run, to the kids parade, live music, breathtaking fireworks, and everything in between to become a tradition in our lives.
We are all aware of the challenges we face in the COVID-19 environment. Many individual and families continue to be affected by the virus. Our heart goes out those that are sick and caregivers and those mourning the loss of a loved one. Our local business community, while doing an amazing job pivoting and embracing their entrepreneurial spirits, is still at a stand-still and those that are operating their efforts are largely focused on serving the public’s essential needs.
This annual tradition is one that the entire Lake Minnetonka community looks forward to. The Excelsior-Lake Minnetonka Chamber of Commerce works hard throughout the entire year to fund the Lake Minnetonka Fourth of July Celebration through hosting events, working with sponsorships, and civic organizations and private individual donations. Revenue streams that normally support his event are non-existent due to the response of the pandemic.
Each year we also rely on over 100 volunteers to pull off this event. Our responsibility to the safety of our volunteers, visitors and the public at large is paramount and has always been our number one priority.
In light of the pandemic, without our usual fundraising events that support the Fourth of July, many sponsorship budgets on hold, and limitations on gatherings of a certain size, the Excelsior-Lake Minnetonka Chamber Board of Directors and Lake Minnetonka Fourth of July Celebration Committee made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s 2020 Lake Minnetonka Fourth of July Celebration.
This year would have been the 132nd year of the Lake Minnetonka Fourth of July Celebration. The Excelsior-Lake Minnetonka Chamber of Commerce looks forward to bringing back the most anticipated tradition on Lake Minnetonka in 2021.
A special thank-you to all our faithful sponsors, local business community, residents and volunteers who make the festival a success year after year. It is heartwarming for our staff and committee members to hear stories of families that return home each year, visitors who return annually, and the economic lift the celebration provides to area stores, restaurants, rental companies and hotels.
We look forward to sharing in this tradition with you in 2021.
